"Our" tobacco industry "death-lihood" up in smoke? Don’t dare dream it!

Richard Daynard’s suggestion that cigarettes be banned is hardly "unthinkable"—at least not to us in the tobacco industry. We’ve witnessed the discouraging worldwide trends in tobacco control, despite our best attempts to thwart them, and see where they could one day lead: our livelihood—er, death-lihood up in smoke. Our death sticks may be lethal, but thankfully they’re still legal, and frankly, we’d like to keep it that way. After all, we make quite a killing pushing those "dirty needles of nicotine delivery devices" around the world. It would be financial suicide—indeed, against our corporate DNA—for us to do otherwise. So we will fight "tooth and coffin nail" against any effort to make cancer puffs history, while hoping our adversaries don’t dare dream about what they might still accomplish—perhaps not in the United States today, but somewhere in the future. Tobacco advertising bans? Case in point.
