      The Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) was established with a $300 million settlement resulting from a class action lawsuit brought by Stanley and Susan Rosenblatt in October 1991, in Dade County Circuit Court (Miami) against the tobacco industry. Its mission is to sponsor scientific and medical research for the early detection, prevention, treatment and cure of diseases and medical conditions caused from exposure to second hand tobacco smoke. Upon opening its doors in 2001, FAMRI continues to achieve its goals by making qualified distributions to combat the diseases caused by second hand tobacco smoke through a peer-reviewed, competitive process. As FAMRI begins its third grant cycle, it has committed to fund a Center of Excellence at the University of California, San Francisco, the work of 67 scientific projects and awards to 13 Distinguished Professors for a total in excess of $30 million. Tables 1 and 2 list the FAMRI grantees from 2002 and 2003.
