Parents as interventionists: Addressing adolescent substance use
2019, Journal of Substance Abuse TreatmentCitation Excerpt :The aim was to test this primary research question: To what extent can a well-trained parent implement a BI to his or her teenager, who is in the early stages of drug use? The extant research literature supports the view that the great majority of parents overwhelmingly disapprove of drug use by their children (Allen et al., 2016; Fearnow, Chassin, Presson, & Sherman, 1998; Jackson, 2002; Kosterman et al., 2016; Steinberg, 2001). Parents also exert powerful positive influences (e.g., Barnes, Hoffman, Welte, Farrell, & Dintcheff, 2006; Nash, McQueen, & Bray, 2005).
Parental and retail supply of tobacco to minors: Findings from a community-based social supply intervention study
2014, Health PolicyCitation Excerpt :Smoking prevalence among parents was also higher in the intervention group. Parents who smoke tend to be more permissive toward adolescent smoking than parents who are non-smokers, and those that are ex-smokers [35]. Furthermore, contamination between the intervention and control populations may have occurred and diluted any effect.
