SEs are presented in parentheses.
The dependent variables for each model are as follows: Model 1: inverse hyperbolic sine (IHS)-transformed fourth quarter (Q4) expenditures in all households. Model 2a: proportion of households with positive Q4 spending in the category. Model 2b: IHS-transformed Q4 expenditures among households with positive spending in the category. Models controlled for characteristics of the household reference person (age, race, gender and marital status), fourth quarter characteristics of the household (size, income, state and year and month of survey participation) and a change in household characteristics between the first and fourth quarters (income change, size change, state unemployment increase and decrease in earners). Prior to analysis, we checked for multicollinearity in our explanatory variables and proceeded after variance inflation factors were found to be below 3.0 for all variables.
