Relationships between eating disorder psychopathology, sexual hormones and sexual behaviours
2019, Molecular and Cellular EndocrinologyCitation Excerpt :A paucity of studies has been published on the relation between EDs and risky sexual behaviour. Indeed, impulsivity underlying binge eating and purging behaviours has been correlated with risky sexual activity (Fisher et al., 1991). In particular, persons with bulimic behaviours often report early sexual experiences (Irving et al., 1990; Kaltiala-Heino et al., 2001; Wiederman and Pryor, 1996), as well as sexual disinhibition both in general population (Kaltiala-Heino et al., 2003) and clinical samples (Nagata et al., 2000).
Outcomes of a Comprehensive Youth Program for HIV-infected Adolescents in Thailand
2015, Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS CareCitation Excerpt :A study in India found that HIV-infected adolescents, many of whom had a sexually acquired infection, had low self-esteem (Mohan & Bedi, 2010) as evaluated by Eysenck's Personality Inventory, Anger Expression Inventory, and Self-Esteem Scale. Low self-esteem has been associated with risk behaviors (Fisher, Schneider, Pegler, & Napolitano, 1991; Stokes & Peterson, 1998) and linked to HIV stigma (Woods, 2012). In contrast, all but one of the adolescents in our study were perinatally infected with HIV and had received counseling and support in routine care for several years during follow-up at HIV clinics.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention with Youth
2011, Psychiatric Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Self-esteem is a construct defining how people feel about or value themselves. It is associated with health-related behaviors and mental and emotional disorders, from depression to anxiety states.40 Bell and colleagues31 purport that “improving the target recipients’ self-esteem is a critical component in any successful prevention/intervention strategy to change health behavior.”(
