Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are the most used nicotine product among US1 and German2 youth. E-cigarette use among young people in Germany has risen sharply. From 2021 to 2024, monthly e-cigarette use among 14- to 17-year olds increased by 88% to 13.9%.3 Exposure to visual posts featuring e-cigarette products on social media is associated with increased e-cigarette use among US adolescents.4 This study examines whether exposure to e-cigarette use in influencer videos is associated with youth e-cigarette use in Germany.

Methods

A sample of 20 630 adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 was recruited from 107 schools in 14 German states. An online survey was conducted between November 2023 and February 2024.
