Because regular, compulsive smoking usually begins in childhood or adolescence, pediatricians and other clinicians with adolescent patients have a unique opportunity to treat and prevent nicotine addiction before it causes lasting harm or death. The author examines the pharmacology, toxicity, and natural history of nicotine addiction as well as its relationship to other drug problems and methods of clinical management.
